Sarah Defriend is a Welsh artist whose work is deeply inspired by the coastal landscapes of her homeland. Originally from a small fishing village in West Wales, she now resides in Swansea, where her studio overlooks the beautiful Swansea Bay. With over 20 years of experience, she has exhibited her art across Wales, England and New Zealand. Recently, she has focused on linocut techniques, favouring Japanese vinyl and hand-prints every one of her pieces. Her practice captures the essence of life by the sea, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary artistry.
This original print represents the life of a Welsh miner and his family with the image of the woman hanging washing whilst her husband or son toils in the depths beneath her. This artwork was selected for inclusion in the collection of the National Library of Wales and we are very excited to have part of the edition in Gower Gallery.
