The Old Boathouse, Mumbles 2025 for sale on behalf of Jamie King

£160.00

Dopting a narrow, vertical format evocative of the Japanese hashira-e tradition, this work recontextualises a local icon, framing the derelict Mumbles Lifeboat House through the imposing Victorian skeleton of the pier’s underbelly. The composition utilises the oxidised, rusted iron columns as a rigorous "frame within a frame," creating a sharp dialogue with the serene, mirror-like reflection in the tidal pool below, a direct nod to the atmospheric stillness found in the works of Kawase Hasui.

There is a sophisticated interplay here between the industrial and the elemental: the tactile grit of barnacle-encrusted iron is set against the soft, stylised planes of the cumulus clouds and the flat expanse of the bay. By isolating the structure within this architectural void, the artist transforms a familiar Welsh landmark into a scene of quiet geometry and meditative clarity.
